Equine Thermography
Veterinary Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI), is a noninvasive diagnostic technique that enables the examiner to visualize & quantify changes in skin surface temperature. An infrared scanning device is used to convert infrared radiation emitted from the skin surface into electrical impulses that are visualized in color on a monitor. The medical grade, FDA registered screening equipment measures a narrow window of temperatures (10-50 degrees Celsius) specific to metabolic heat and physiologic function. The visual image graphically maps the body temperature and is referred to as a thermogram. The spectrum of colors indicates an increase or decrease in the amount of infrared radiation being emitted from the body surface. Since there is a high degree of thermal symmetry in the normal body temperature, subtle abnormal temperature changes can be easily identified.
All thermal findings are produced by a sympathetic response processed through the central nervous system and are exclusive to each individual. A horse’s thermogram is as unique as our fingerprints! Thermography does not “see” structure or anatomy.
Rather, DITI objectively shows the physiological response relating to pain, pathology, injury and dysfunction anywhere in the horse’s body. It is the next best thing to having a horse that can tell you where it hurts! DITI has been widely recognized as a useful tool in the early identification of musculoskeletal and neurological injuries, especially non specific and difficult to diagnose lameness. While its major clinical value is this early detection; it can also provide critical information on the effects of the horse’s injury, disease or prescribed treatment. Our screenings are interpreted only by Board Certified Veterinary Thermologists for the most accurate and reliable results, are completely unbiased, and show excellent correlation with other diagnostic tests.
Equispectrum Team

Taryn Brandt
Taryn Brandt, a graduate of Virginia Tech, founded EquiSpectrum, LLC in 2008 and has been providing exception veterinary thermal imaging throughout Florida since. In 2011, Southwest Medical Thermal Imaging, LLC was established to provide the same risk assessment and early disease detection to our two legged counterparts. She holds the highest certification available to technicians as a Level III Certified Clinical Thermography. This training opportunity is offered on an invitation only basis by the American College of Clinical Thermology (ACCT). When she is not busy imaging in the medical or veterinary clinics, you will find her conducting training courses for the ACCT, overseeing the education and certification for new thermographers. Out of the clinic, she is an avid runner, paddle boarder and equestrian enjoying farm life with her two dogs and two horses in Punta Gorda, Florida.

Stay One Step Ahead of Injuries
Routine preventative screening can identify subtle thermal abnormalities that may be indicative of an injury forming. Isolating the potential for hoof imbalances, soft tissue inflammation or joint disorders, allows the problem to be addressed immediately, avoiding a more serious injury, missed show schedules and insurance claims.
